MARBLEHEAD
Another Eastern Massachusetts town with a deep-rooted history is Marblehead. This beautiful peninsula was home to early settlers who made their living as fishermen and seafaring workers in the early 1600s. The town was officially incorporated in 1649.
LOCATION
Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on its north, east and west side, Marblehead provided the perfect setting for numerous nautical endeavors. Swampscott borders the town to the south and Salem is to the southwest. Marblehead is about 18 miles northeast of Boston.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Marblehead men played a significant role in the annals of American history. They were among those who accepted the challenge offered by General George Washington to attack British supply ships during the American Revolution.
The aftermath of the American Revolution saw the decline of the fishing industry and a horrific gale in 1846 annihilated what little was left. Soon, the town's settlers turned to shoe manufacturing. Unfortunately, two large fires in 1877 and 1888 devastated those facilities. The economy recovered by the end of that century thanks to the interest of
visitors attracted by the beautiful harbor and coastline scenery.
